10 Packing Tips

If you are moving soon, you might be feeling overwhelmed by the number of tasks that need to be completed before the day of your move actually arrives. One of the worst parts of moving for most people is the process of packing – and reasonably so. When having to pack everything you own into boxes, there are a lot of factors that can make it unenjoyable, boring and time-consuming. This is why we have gathered the top 10 tips on how to properly pack your valuables and prepare them for their upcoming relocation.

1.         Find a moving company that understands your needs

When you have the help of a professional moving company that understands your moving needs and expectations – the entire process can be a breeze for you. Before you even start the process of packing, search for the best moving company to tackle your relocation in the best manner possible. Find a moving company that can accommodate your move size, has the right moving equipment to provide you with a smooth service and one that will offer their services at a reasonable cost. If you are looking for movers that offer all of the above – call Down The Block Movers today.

2.         Give yourself time to pack

As most people tend to underestimate how much stuff they own until they start going through their collection, you will probably be needing a lot more time to complete this process than you have initially intended to give yourself. Starting at least two weeks before your move is a good time to start if you are moving to a smaller space, and at least four if you are moving out of a medium to large home. Giving yourself more time will result in less stress during the process as you won’t be rushing to complete it.

3.         Least used rooms should be packed first

Starting with the rooms you never use, or the ones with the most stuff in them are both great options when looking for the best room to start your packing venture in. Your garage for example is both a room you most likely don’t use on a daily basis and one that also might have way too much stuff in there to comprehend – which is why it might be perfect to start there. No matter what you choose to go with first, keep your most used rooms unpacked until a week before your move.

4.         Purchase packing supplies made for moving

As most people will tell you that you can save a lot of money by cutting corners on the packing supplies – that is completely true. However, scoring deals at your local grocery store can result in your boxes falling apart due to wear and having your items break or get damaged during the moving process – and this is something you should avoid at all costs. Instead, visit your local hardware store and purchase supplies specifically made for moving and ensure the protection of your items during the entire move.

5.         Make sure to stay organized

Tackling the process of packing without any kind of plan can make you stress during and after the process as it will most likely result in chaos. There won’t be a way to predict how far out you are with your packing venture, how much work is left and it will feel like a much harder task to complete if not handled in phases. Packing room by room will be the easiest way to handle the packing phase of your move and stay organized during the entire process.

6.         If it rattles, it isn’t packed properly

Your boxes need to be filled completely with no space left for your items to shift inside. If you pack your boxes and leave empty spaces, the contents are bound to break during transit and this is what no one wants to happen during their relocation. Fill your boxes with packing peanuts, newspapers, clothing, bubble wrap or any other kind of padding material that you could possibly think of so the contents of your boxes remain safe and sound during every step of the way.

7.         Label your boxes with rooms and contents

Spending some extra time while labeling your boxes with not only the rooms they go into – but the contents of them as well can save you a lot of time when unpacking. Your movers will also know exactly where to place your boxes, and which boxes need some extra attention. You will thank yourself in the long run.

8.         Separate your important items

Instead of packing your essential items with your other belongings, consider keeping them at your side during the entire moving process or simply packing them in a clear box, bag or suitcase so you can have easy access to them once you have been settled into your new home. Instead of rummaging through your boxes to find your toothbrush or utensils, consider keeping these items unpacked until the last night before your move.

9.         Create an inventory

Having an inventory by your side during the entire moving process can make the world of a difference to you and your movers as well, as they will have your list of items to check while loading and unloading the truck, and so will you. It is important to make sure that none of your items are forgotten during the process and that everything arrives at your new location in perfect condition.

10.       Unpack box by box

Instead of unpacking every single box once you have the time and energy to do so, consider unpacking a single box and placing its contents in their designated space before proceeding to the next once. This will simplify the entire unpacking process and make it seem much easier than causing chaos in your home and stressing for no good reason.
